20 minutes. tick tock tick.

I have got 20 minutes before I’m back to study again. Well, I should have been studying 40 minutes ago, but blogging (for my assignment #excuse) is much more fun, so yah, there goes my explanation. But seriously, I never thought that blogging could be this fun, it doesn’t really matter if whether there are actually someone out there who read your writing or not. (well it matters, but yeah, not really, eh.. oh well LOL).

So, an update of life. here it goes.

I made a video! (HAHAHAH!), and this is the funnest part ever.

alert alert: copyright by Marcella Purnama! whoohoooo, finally I’m able to say that. LOL.

and see my blog assignment for more information.

As I have mentioned before, I have a major assignment, worth 60%, and it’s a blog. GOSH. seriously, a blog is worth 60%? I have decided that the subject coordinator is not so smart after all, for a blog to get that HIGH marks means that the blog must be in a very high standard. I hope I’ll get a decent mark. well. at the very least.

But yeah, we are given a choice to do a video instead of a blog post on one of the question, so…. getting tired of writing academically but yet informally (you need to follow certain rules in that assignment, which is pretty weird for a blog), I chose to do a video. It turns out to be like that (see above), well, at least it’s not a disaster! hahaha, there’s always a first thing to everything, right?

Another update of life, now I have a twitter account, a facebook account, two blogs, two yahoomails, two gmails, two hotmails, and one uni account. PLUS, a youtube account. Life is never so busy, eh? of course I never really take care of alllll those, I think I’ll be crashing soon if I need to maintain alllll of those (which I’m not intending to). But seriously, get real… Even though I’m a media student, isn’t it just too much? (*stressed).

And yet another update: out of the 12 hours that I should be going to uni this week, I only attend 2. This is the craziest thing that I ever did as a uni student. On monday, I’ve got 2 hours lectures and 2 hours tutorial. Being given the major assignment (and the material of these lectures are not relevant for my assignment), I decided to skip, and just went to the 2 hours tutorials. Tuesday – Hillsong conference! (stay tuned for more info on Hillsong conference… IF i have the time…). I have 4 lectures on Tuesday, but one of them crashed with another lecture (which means I never go to that lecture since the beginning of the semester), so I skipped the other 3. Wednesday – day off, Thursday… I have 2 tutes and 2 lectures today. But I just COULDN’T wake up in the morning (#excuse…). So skipped one tute. Another tute at 12… well, saw the material….. hmm. “I just do my assignment at home instead of going to uni”. lectures…. ah, just lectopia them. so there you go.

*looking at the time… aaarghhh it’s 4 minutessss moreeee…. *please time, bear with me.. stop for a while… I want to sip my tea and just sit down on the couch… wrapped in my blanket… and relax for a while……….

time does not reply.

As a closing, just wanna say that someone gave me this song, it’s lovely. enjoy! =D

Letter to me

When I was seventeen,
I wish I knew what I know now.
maybe, it will save me from heartaches
from unnecessary mistakes
…from inflicting pain.

But life
has its own wheel.
life has its own journey.
life has lessons that you need to go through.

Yes, life cares about the finish line,
but life cares more about how you get to the finish line.

I wonder why I have always drawn to a song with a story.
a song with a history.
a song,
with an honest lyric.
a song that left me wondering,
what would I do differently
if I knew what I know back then.

Maybe eliminate some crushes.
Maybe spend less time on facebook.
Maybe I’d take time to stop for a while and enjoy life.
Maybe I’d smile more.
Maybe I’d care about my friends more.
Maybe I’d discover my passion sooner.

For each and every thing that I have gone through
there is just one word.
Those times become my past
become my moments
becoming me.

oh yes, they make me cry,
they make me laugh.
they say good-bye,
and it was not easy.

but life goes on,
and I’m still standing here

trying to dance in the rain
waiting, for my sunshine
who will tell me that
everything’s gonna be alright.

love more. laugh more. smile more. cry more. live. more.

Letter to me – Brad Paisley

If I could write a letter to me
And send it back in time to myself at 17
First I’d prove it’s me by saying look under your bed
There’s a Skoal can and a Playboy no one else would know you hid
And then I’d say I know it’s tough
When you break up after seven months
And yeah I know you really liked her and it just don’t seem fair
All I can say is pain like that is fast and it’s rare

And oh you got so much going for you going right
But I know at 17 it’s hard to see past Friday night
She wasn’t right for you
And still you feel like there’s a knife sticking out of your back
And you’re wondering if you’ll survive
You’ll make it through this and you’ll see
You’re still around to write this letter to me

At the stop sign at Tomlinson and Eighth
Always stop completely don’t just tap your breaks
And when you get a date with Bridgett make sure the tank is full
On second thought forget it that one turns out kinda cool
Each and every time you have a fight
Just assume you’re wrong and dad is right
And you should really thank Mrs. Brinkman
She spent so much extra time
It’s like she sees the diamond underneath
And she’s polishin’ you ’til you shine

And oh you got so much going for you going right
But I know at 17 it’s hard to see past Friday night
Tonight’s the bonfire rally
But you’re staying home instead because if you fail Algebra
Mom and dad will kill you dead
Trust me you’ll squeak by and get a C
And you’re still around to write this letter to me

You’ve got so much up ahead
You’ll make new friends
You should see your kids and wife
And I’d end by saying have no fear
These are nowhere near the best years of your life

I guess I’ll see you in the mirror
When you’re a grown man
P.S. go hug Aunt Rita every chance you can

And oh you got so much going for you going right
But I know at 17 it’s hard to see past Friday night
I wish you’d study Spanish
I wish you’d take a typing class
I wish you wouldn’t worry, let it be
I’d say have a little faith and you’ll see

If I could write a letter to me
To me

When Five Fell

“New Short Released: “When Five Fell”
by Wesley Chan

(taken straightly from the website, all rights reserved by WongFu Productions)

The Process
One year passed since the short was first announced. The first question is, obviously, “What took so long?” And sure, it’s not even one of our longer shorts– it’s only ten minutes! Ironically, my initial mindset for this short was to make something simple and quickly. Something with the minimal number of actors and only voiceovers to make the production as light as possible. Yeah. That didn’t happen. There are a few reasons WFF took one year to complete.

The short was created in a totally backwards manner. I had decided the parameters fairly early on (a love story, a narration from five objects, a girl), but the script was actually written after I shot it. From the beginning, I had scenes in mind, but I didn’t intensively think about the dialogue until I had finished collecting all the footage. There were nights I just sat watching a shot for hours just thinking of a line.

The structure was totally fluid. Since WFF is basically a series of five confessions, there was no linear timeline to follow. And since the script wasn’t written yet, there was no outline or blueprint to follow while editing. This being the case, I spent a lot of time deciding how to piece together each shot into a sequence that made sense.

This short was created at the speed of life. I let my mood dictate when I would work. There were days when it was the only thing I wanted to do. I was excited and eager. Then there were days I hated it. I dreaded thinking about the entire project. And then sometimes, it was simply the last thing on my mind.  It would sit untouched for months. Throughout the year, my attitude towards the short shifted a lot. This was new to me. Usually when we start a project, we finish it fairly quickly. But thinking back, making a short like this benefits from a comfortable pace. I worked on it only when I truly wanted to. Only when I had a genuine desire to see it move forward. If at any time I got tired, frustrated, or bored, I stopped working. In that sense, you could say WFF only received my undying attention.

The Objects

Can the things we love, love us back just the same?

Glasses (David Choi – davidchoimusic.com) – The glasses represent sight. In a relationship, there are times when our one desire is to share with the other person. We hope to offer a new perspective. To learn and grow from each other in that way. To show the world. Unfortunately, nothing stays clear forever. Many things can blind us: jealousy, doubt, overthinking, and ironically, comfort.

(Bobby Choy – bigphonymusic.com) – The phone represents hearing. Relationships can’t exist without listening and communication. Sometimes, circumstances prevent people from communicating face to face. That distance greatly effects them. We hear about experiences when what we really want is to live them. Words can only go so far. The phone is interesting because it is constantly eavesdropping on our talks. What would that feel like? To always be talked to but never the subject of conversation. It must hurt to be so unknowingly ignored.

(AJ Rafael – myspace.com/ajrafael) – The umbrella represents touch. The very simple idea of being close enough to touch someone. Physical contact. To be able to hold, cover, protect. These are basic parts of a relationship we hope to fulfill. Essentially an umbrella reflects occasional necessity. But who would want that? To feel needed when it’s only convenient.

(Paul Dateh – pauldateh.com) – The scarf represents smell. The intimacy of knowing someones scent is very special. It’s a privelege that isn’t easily shared and is often overlooked. It may sound ridiculous, but who are the people you can identifty with smell? Most likely those that you are very close with. People you have known for more than awhile. Also, scents can fade. Physical contact carries and transfers a scent but when that contact disappears, the scent is no longer.

(Chris Dinh) – The cup represents taste. More specifically, the cup represents a kiss. And a kiss is the most universal symbol of love and affection. The fact that it describes a first kiss is even more significant. A first kiss is innocent and naive. We cherish it as though it will last forever. But when the cup is broken, the kiss is no longer possible– just like a relationship.

A pair of glasses that goes blind. A phone that resorts to eavesdropping. An umbrella that longs to be held. A scarf that treasures scent. A cup that wants to be kissed. These are the ways I tried to personify the objects to show they fell in and out of love. Between the five, viewers should be able to relate to different dimensions and roles of a relationship. Whether it’s budding in the early stages, the challenge of long distance, slowly fading feelings, or losing out to someone else. Even the order of the objects in the short show a progression in the relationship. Starting from looking and eventually moving onto touching.

The Look

Just like the objects are based on senses, I wanted the short to appeal to the senses. I wanted to stimulate people with beautiful images of the typical everyday things. One goal was to have each and any shot to stand alone as a still photo. Of course nothing can be that spectacular in real life. It only exists in the hyperreal, in our memories and imagination. The color treatment is reflective of this– with deep and saturated tones. A lot of WFF was shot during the “golden hour” right before and during sunset. This brief time, when the sun hangs low in the sky, provides warm color and excellent outlines around subjects.

The Sound

Jesse Chui (songsforcinema.com) worked tirelessly to create the music for this short. The sound of it was crucial for evoking the right emotions. And I would say Jesse hit it spot on. I approached him a year ago with the project and he was really interested. I have to apologize to him for lagging so long. Jesse is amazingly talented and there was a lot of back and forth between us for each song. I think he really succeeded in creating music that can be heard as hopeful and romantic but also tragic and bittersweet.

For the voices, I asked popular YouTube artists like David Choi, AJ Rafael, and Paul Dateh because as singers their voices already have a great quality. In addition, hopefully having big names will lend to the online success and spread of the short. Bobby Choy voiced the telephone and he is the lead singer/songwriter of Big Phony. Chris Dinh voiced the cup and he’s been in many of our shorts before, including “Up in da Club” and “Poser!”

Besides the music and narration, there is rarely any ambient sound. This was a conscious choice. Since the way we experience memories is very much the same. Sometimes we choose to only remember the important pieces of an experience. All else fades away.”

## Postscript – an afterthought

There are many great songs. great videos. great artists.
The world lacks no talent. lacks no genius. lacks no skill.
But there are only a few of them who last.

So, what makes a difference?

I’d say

It’s the story behind.
the values reflected in those arts.
the journey that takes us into a different world.
where once again, you learn something worthwhile.

It’s the passion.
the artist’s heart,
translated into an honourable piece of work,
that finds its way into the viewers’ lives.
it leaves imprints
and most of all,
it’s honest.

Marcella Purnama, 2011

An inspiring message brought by Pastor Agus Lutan today. It’s about TIME.

According to some experienced people, you are able to see what is the value of a person by observing the way he used his time. Does he spend time with his family? Is he busy working? Does he waste his time doing nothing? And I think it’s really true. If you value your friend, you will spend your time with them. If you value your money, you will give more time to work. If you value your partner, you will sacrifice your leisure time and try to spend as much time with her. Value study? Then you would probably be studying as we speak and never ever read this blog in the first place (hahah, jk. drinking tea makes me high).

The Bible also tells us to “use our time wisely”, because you will never know if tomorrow still exists. Sometimes, it is as if time is the only asset that you have, which does not have a pause, stop, play, or even a rewind button. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.

So, what should we do with our time?

T: Treasure.

A wise person knows how to treasure his time for the right things. Psalm says that a human’s lifetime is 70 years, 80, if lucky. and that is nothing compared to the eternity. Sometimes we just forgot that we are living our days now for the sake of where we’ll be spending the rest of our lives in eternity. Treasure your time, don’t give it on an auction sale. Seize the opportunity NOW. you want to make a change? do it now. you want to reconcile with your peers or family? do it now. you want to tell your someone special you love them? do it now. because tomorrow may be too late.

I: Invest.

If a businessman knows where to invest, what to invest, and when is the right time to invest, let me tell you, he’ll be successful by now. As a human, we should also know towards what things should we invest our time on and when is the right time to do so. The first thing that we need to invest our time is: GOD. Remember, it’s ETERNITY. There’s much more to life than just these 70 years. Receiving Christ as our Saviour only is not enough, we need to invest on that salvation. (see my posts on Driven by Eternity for further message about these stuffs).

The second thing is: family. Even though the pastor only says family, I would like to add friends and other people towards this category. Albert Einstein said, “only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile“. Translated into Christianity, that means: THE PEOPLE COUNT! You need to invest your time in your partner, your parents, your children if you already have, your best friends, your friends, and even strangers. And I really mean a real investment here. It takes sacrifice, it takes effort, it takes TIME. Let me ask you this, would you rather be known as a stingy, rich person or as a friendly person who cares about others? would you rather be known for your high grades in school or to be known as someone who impacts other people’s lives? Money, fame, and all other things will be gone, but people are made for eternity. They last.

Last one: money. It’s true that people may be cynical about this at some point. But if I may, I would like to translate this category as passion. It’s about to do what you are good at, what you like, and to reach your goals and your success. If you are a teacher, don’t teach half-heartedly. If you are a barista, be the best barista in your place. If you are a housewife, be a mother that your children would be proud of; a wife that your husband adores. If you are a businessman, be an honest businessman, with persistence and endurance. In other words, if you have a passion in something, go for it. work on it. Invest your time on it. Not half-heartedly, but with determination.

M: Manage

Do you know that the Bible says that our days are “numbered”? We will soon be gone like a wave tossed in the ocean, like a vapour in the wind. So the next part is to manage our time. One key word here: know your PRIORITIES. Managing your time means you know what is the most important (of course, God), and what comes next (i.e. family, friends, ministry, work, etc). You need to manage your time because we only have 24 hours in a day, and not a minute more.

Remember an old quotation: We can never turn back the pages of time, though we may wish to relive a happy moment, or say goodbye just one last time, we never can, because the sands of time continue to fall, and we can’t turn the hourglass over. Anonymous

E: Enjoy

Remember to relax and enjoy life. Enjoy it with the ones you love. and the most important thing: remember to enjoy everything, the bad times, the good times. Because Ecclesiastes says that “there is time for everything.” And God can take part in every moment of our lives and turn it into good, even though we are faced with problems.

A Time for Everything

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace. – Ecclesiastes 3

As a closing word, I would like to remind all of you, once again, to use your time wisely.

Because “Time is all you have and you may find one day that you have less than you think.”
Randy Pausch.

Have a blessed Sunday, all.

“Life can only be understood backward. It must be lived forward.”
“Life isn’t about keeping score.
It’s not about how many people call you and it’s not about who you’ve dated, are dating, or haven’t dated at all.
It isn’t about who you’ve kissed, what sport you play, or which guy or girl likes you.
It’s not about your shoes or your hair or the color of your skin or where you live or go to school.
In fact, it’s not about grades, money, clothes, or colleges that accept you or not.
Life isn’t about if you have lots of friends, or if you are alone, and it’s not about how accepted or unaccepted you are.
Life just isn’t about that.
But life is about who you love and who you hurt.
It’s about how you feel about yourself.
It’s about trust, happiness, and compassion.
Life is about avoiding jealousy, overcoming ignorance, and building confidence.
It’s about what you say and what you mean.
It’s about seeing people for who they are and not what they have.
Most of all, it is about choosing to use your life to touch someone else’s in a way that could never have been achieved otherwise.
These choices are what life’s about.”
P.ps. I feel like watching The Curious Case of Benjamin Button right after I finished this blog. I love that movie. sooo much. :))

Re: I will not give up

It is indeed ironic that I just read my sister’s blog yesterday titled, “don’t give up”. How grateful I am that she posted that blog yesterday, which phrase now keeps repeated in my mind over and over again.

Marcella, you can’t give up.

It does not necessarily mean that there is something bizarre happening today. Not really. Just a usual winter morning with a sleepless night the day before and a tutorial at 9am. And the fact that you have put so much effort into an assignment but it seems that it’s just not enough.

Life is weird for students, or at least for me, because the assignments that you expect you have done some justice turn out to be the lousy ones. While other assignments that you predict that you will get the bottom marks turn out to be great. It makes life more exciting? aiooo, not really.

I guess what humans search in this life is stability. But a roller coaster ride is the expertise of life. Remember that old song by Ronan Keating, Life is a Roller Coaster? Well, sometimes I just feel that it is.

Sometimes I just wonder on whether I give justice towards my studies. Sometimes I wonder what giving my best means. Sometimes I really do wonder which path that I must go in order to succeed.

Yeah, grades do NOT determine your life. But at some point it is also a reflection of your life. Well?

Quoting a Bible verse from my sister’s blog,

Isaiah 40:31

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagle.

They will run and not grow weary.

They will walk and not be faint.”

I think that… Nah, don’t worry about it. It’s just another assignment. Another paper with a grade. I did some justice towards it, but it’s just not enough. It’s okay. I will fly higher.

“Heart weeps.
Head tries to help heart.
Head tells heart how it is, again:
You will lose the ones you love. They will all go. But even the earth will go, someday.
Heart feels better, then.
But the words of head do not remain long in the ears of heart.
Heart is so new to this.
I want them back, says heart.
Head is all heart has.
Help, head. Help heart.”
Lydia Davis (Varieties of Disturbance: Stories)
